Since 2007, every August, SoLace Studios partners with Elkton Area United Services (EAUS) to raise an awareness in the need for school supplies for area students in need.
Every year parents scurry to buy notebooks, pencils, pens, paper and other school supplies for their children. However, for families who are living on the edge of financial security purchasing school supplies for their children can be a major burden.
Thus, Elkton Area United Services (EAUS) is teams up with SoLace Studios to hold a Back to School Supply Drive to help Elkton area students have the basic essentials they need to succeed in school. School supplies may be dropped off in Elkton at SoLace Studios, 193 W. Spotswood Ave. from August 1 through 15 each year. School supply donations valued at $10 or more or cash contributions to EAUS made at SoLace Studios during the drive receives a 15 percent off shopping pass which will be valid until December 31 of the year the donation is made at SoLace Studios. Sale items and special orders are excluded from the offer. School supplies needed include but not limited to notebook paper, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders and folders, number 2 pencils, blue and black ink pens, highlighters, trapper keepers and backpacks.
“EAUS is fortunate that SoLace Studios is willing to help us provide the necessary tools for children to succeed in school,” said Marsha Deavers, EAUS Executive Director. “When students of any grade, elementary through high school, do not have paper, pencils and other essential items, it is difficult for them to do well in their school work. This year we will be giving supplies to five schools. By providing school supplies EAUS is trying to improve literacy in our community since 36 percent of the adults 25 years and older do not have a high school diploma or equivalency.”
Barb Polin of Solace Studios said, “It makes sense for me and my customers to reach out to those less fortunate in our community and assist EAUS with this program.”
SoLace Studios is the working studio of marbling fiber artist Barb Polin as well as the fine handcrafts of over 100 regional and national artisans in a completely restored circa 1920's building originally housing The Kite Drug Co.
EAUS is a non-profit comprehensive social service agency serving over 11,000 residents. In addition to school supplies, the organization provides assistance with housing, utilities, medical needs, transportation, monthly food pantry, weekly meals on wheels, holiday cheer, traveler’s aid, GED classes, free reading books for children, senior citizen activities, as well as a thrift store. The agency is a United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County partner.
